Among the many things that the Triangle has to offer, it is probably best known for its world-class universities. The Triangle also excels in other colleges and in both elementary and secondary schools.
Ranked among the great universities in the country, The University of North Carolina was the nation's first state university to accept and graduate students. UNC has approximately 22,000 students and almost 1,900 full-time faculty teaching in more than 100 fields.
The state land grant university, NCSU with approximately 24,000 students offers numerous undergraduate and graduate programs with special strengths in technology, agriculture, engineering and architectural design.
Duke is a private university with 5,700 undergraduate and 3,800 graduate and professional students. Duke also provides specialized training and research opportunities through its Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory and Phytotron. It also has has the nationally known Duke Medical Center and research facility.
